Hallo everybody!

Today I'm going to talk you about an Italian duo called Japanese Gum, from Genua.
Recently I could see them live, and then I bought their last work, called "Hey folks! Nevermind,we are all falling down", which is distributed by the Japanese label Friend of mine.
I really enjoyed their album, and I reccommend it to all of you. Ethereal electronics melted with guitars and synths. While listening, I felt like I was inside a long dream, full of hypnotic vibrations and warm pulses: they're really good in mixing simple, catchy melodies and refined rhytmic beats. Furthermore, what I appreciate most about them is their courage in being involved in sounds and genres which are mostly at home in northern Europe, and less common in Italy... Well, they can be considered the Italian answer to those bands (let's talk about Iceland?) that UM loves so much.

Dear friends, have a relaxing trip on hypothetical remote planets on a shuttle made of Japanese gum!
See you soon,

Laura Chieregato

If you dream about night like I do. If you consider it mysterious and sensual like I do. If in every club of the town there's a hidden surprise. If this surprise looks like a woman. A woman who dances alone.

In my town these surprises are - sadly - not so frequent. This is the trouble with the little towns.
But I have to say thank you to Antony Raijekov, from Bulgary, for having given me a thrill.
Music is dream, they say. Well, listening to Antony music means to abandon yourself to sensuality and mistery.
Have you ever known a girl so different from you? Have you ever kissed a girl whose skin has a different color from yours? Have you ever caressed the skin of a woman who has the perfume of another continent?

Antony's music tells this amazing and unforgettable story. And that's all.

Today's music looks like those days during which the sun comes out suddenly, breaks the sky after a storm and lights the streets, the buildings, and the graffiti on the walls...
And so, we are obliged to stop looking to the ground and turn our eyes around. God, it's full of colors 'round us!
Amélie's music is like that. It's simple, instantaneous, truly "pop", and vividly colored.

As you know, UtopicMusic doesn't like dressing the posts with too much words. A few ingredients, simple recipes and let's leave room to the music.
So let you be caught, 'cause today's ingredients are really simple:

"Do it over"
"slow"
"Shake you"
"get high"
"soon a shine will come"

Romanticism, metropolitan beat, nostalgic rides, love... all of this melted in a EP called "be low", which deserves a careful listening.
This band plays music which sounds "English", somehow. But if I told they're Italian, almost no one would believe me... So, go and discover them:

Stay tuned,

The winter atmospheres - that are often not cold at all - are playing an important role in our blog. A little big treasure of dreams that you'll easily find, if you'll let the player play long enough.
Today we are going to add to this treasure another little jewel. I'm talking about "Celestial Aeon Project", led by the Finnish artist Matti Paalanen.

This is ancestral music: night spirits that protect our sleep and do not scare, and sideral spaces waved by the wind.
Matti probably gives us a splendid and personal picture of his land. Who, just like us, has never saw - but often imagined - Finland, has the great chance to travel there by listening to this music.
So let's start travelling, carried by our imagination, that sleepy imagination which only music can wake.. Hoping that Matti could hear us, while recording the end of winter in his home studio.

See you soon,

Carlo Trevisan.

PS: there are so many other interesting things in Matti's production. In particular, he's got a brilliant talent in writing soundtracks. Go and fully discover this artist, it's really worth doing...

Dear guys,

let's start this new year with an artist who has been catching my attention for weeks. His name is Marcus Cotten, from Portland (Oregon).
Marcus is the author of "Channel in Channel out", a project that deals with music but also photography, drawings and movies. If you want to have an idea of this "collage" of different arts, please check his site and myspace:

http://channelinchannelout.com/

http://www.myspace.com/chinchout

Try and see "Invalid entry and the enchanting word", where music and scenes are directly linked.
The word that, in my opinion, best explains this artist's work is "borderless". I must say that is very difficult to find such an artist, who is able to stand between electronic and classic compositions and to match them with drawings, pics...
Dear friends, now it is up to you to decide the order of all this puzzle pieces... I found mine!

Cheers, and have a nice listening (and a nice view),

Laura Chieregato

Some beautiful places, scenes and tunes still exist in this strange world of ours. Many of them are sheltered from our view: so little people know about them. Once we have discovered them, we wanna try not to forget them. This is why, periodically, we do not post new tunes but simply check the “random” mark on the administrator page of our blog, and let the old ones play.

And this is why, in order to “color” our music based blog, we sometimes post also some pics which represent places and situations we had the need to “fix”. Beautiful and remote places, as the mountain one where Carlo is going to spend some relaxing days. Beautiful and secret scenes, just like the “family one” that Fiorenzo saw this morning from his window: a wild cat that is breeding its babes, hidden in a closed courtyard which no one can access. A scene that can offer some unexpected relief even when one is lost in a million thoughts.

We want to wish you a happy new year, hoping that our readers will help us keeping in mind all the little fragments of “grace” we hardly found during these two years.

See you next year,

Fiorenzo Fuolega & Carlo Trevisan

Last summer my band had the great honour to open the show of one of my favourite Italian bands, whose name is "Bachi da Pietra". I love their dark poetry, their skinny minimalism, the guitar which is hit like a drum (and the effect is sometimes the same). Bruno Dorella and Giovanni Succi are among the most talented musicians of present day Italy. While I already knew what are the other Dorella's project (OvO, Ronin), I didn't know anything about what Succi did before Bachi da Pietra formed. So, when the gig finished, I asked him 'bout it. He told me: "Listen to Madrigali Magri".

So I came back home and turned the computer on. Well, I discovered a beautiful band, which is somehow the "father project" – or, at least, the “brother one” - of Bachi da Pietra.

Instrumental or whispered songs, poetry, experimentation, noise, melodies, spleen, minimalism... Things I love so much. Unfortunately, they split before I could be aware of their music.

Some of their songs are in free download on their site (www.succi.it/mm), from where we've taken the music you're listening to (“Porte dell'inverno” excluded).

"Giorno è notte" (which is a calembour: "giorno e notte" means "night AND day", while "giorno è notte" means "day IS night"...) is a fantastic dark ballad, which recalls, especially in its part 2, the quite early (and more inspired) Jason Molina of "Protection spells". And “Porte dell'inverno” is, in my opinion, such a song that even Mr Tom Waits – God bless him - couldn't avoid loving it.

Enjoy,

Fiorenzo Fuolega

This day has been full with clouds and rain. It's really cold 'round here. The wind shakes the trees and makes everything - the last leaves on the branches, or some badly closed garbage  bags - drop on the streets floor. Everything seems to fade away. And just like so many other people, I go on running home.

The Slowmovies, with their dense and dilatated atmospheres, seem to me very fit for telling this kind of story.
And here I am, facing my laptop in my room, protected from rain and wind. Let's start to write about the way I'm repeatedly going along, day after day. During today's trip I enjoyed the slow company of "Jèrobo".
In the end, this is the little big privilege I have, to tell about a tiny fragment of my life while letting music accompany me.
The Slowmovies, in their way, tell us about streets, wind, garbage bags, closed rooms where some people shut theirselves up to write something strictly autobiographical.

There could be chance for everyone to live and tell about his own, personal - and slow - soundtrack. This is the most important thing.

Keep in touch,

Carlo Trevisan

PS: everything I wrote in this post does not apply to the fourth track: "Penis development cream". It's just another (slow?) story...

These days I found another crazy musician called "I am this". This guy from Phoenix, USA, is an extraordinary manipulator of differend sounds. He takes strings, guitars, banjoes, and add them sometimes dub/trip-hop, more often jungle rhythms, with some songs that reach industrial peaks that could be fit for an idm rave... Anyway, I prefer the songs like "sea of something" where the jungle does not completely "sit on" the melodies, or like the splendid and schizoid "May flights of angels", where a dub beat is almost "devastating" a gentle string melody (is it a famous aria? I think so, but I can't remember...). But if you like it hard, check out all of his tunes and you'll find a lot of hard-beated, nervous music, just like the second part of "Sunrise". This last song comes from "Paragon", an album that has been released a few months ago, while the other songs are from previous productions.

Dear friends
today I'm coming back  to Sweden - namely in Stockholm - to tell you about  kråkvind, the Jakub Orzechowski's solo project.

The biggest quality that one can recognize immediatly in Jakub's music is simplicity.
In these tracks there are no words, and Jakub himself claims not to dwell too much on "music design". He looks for spontaneity, trying to accommodate his instinc.

Are these desolate and sad sounds? Maybe. But they're also - in their own way - very flattering. Like a sort of carillon.
It took me a few words to describe this music. Small musical gems from the deep north.
So, in the end, turn off  the lights and have a nice dream!
I wish you a good listening...

Laura Chieregato
